    Questions about the sources

Is Ex Ante a legal database?

Yes. Ex Ante is a Belgian legal database of more than a million documents, and a search engine at the same time. You search legislation, parliamentary documents, case law, decisions and legal literature in one search, instead of in each database separately.

Which courts and tribunals does Ex Ante search?

Ex Ante contains case law and decisions from dozens of institutions, including the Court of Cassation, the Constitutional Court, the Council of State, the Council for Alien Law Litigation, the Council for Permit Disputes, the courts of appeal, the labour courts, the courts of first instance and the enterprise courts. The table above shows how many documents there are for each institution.

Does it include European case law?

Yes. Ex Ante contains the case law of the Court of Justice and the General Court of the European Union and of the European Court of Human Rights, alongside the Belgian case law that applies it.

Does Ex Ante include French-language and Dutch-language case law?

Yes. Ex Ante contains case law in Dutch and French, including that of the courts of appeal in Liège and Mons, the French-speaking labour courts and the courts in Wallonia and Brussels, as well as the Flemish courts. With the language filter, you choose whether to search one language or both.

Does Ex Ante include decisions by local and public authorities?

Yes. Ex Ante contains decisions of municipal and provincial executives on environmental permits, as well as decisions of the Flemish Government, the Data Protection Authority and the bodies dealing with access to administrative documents. So you can see how an authority ruled before, next to the case law that followed.
